Her performances have been described as a “spiritual experience” and “utterly mesmerizing” (LA WEEKLY). This extraordinary jazz vocalist has earned comparisons to Anita Baker, Sarah Vaughan, and Cassandra Wilson – but with Charmaine there’s a distinct difference.
Charmaine Clamor is the first Filipina jazz singer to find success on American radio. Her current recording, “Flippin’ Out” ( FreeHamRecords 2007), simultaneously made the top-5 on both JazzWeek’s World (#2 ranking) and Traditional Jazz (#4) charts. But what distinguishes Ms. Clamor from other jazz artists is how she has successfully injected her Filipino culture into the genre. Her creation of “jazzipino” is the result of merging traditional Filipino folk music, language, and instruments with the soul and swing of American jazz.

Besides her abundances of talent and good looks, Charmaine has consistently been an advocate of the arts, and of course a “kababayan,” which loosely translates as “a fellow Filipino.” Herself an immigrant, Ms Clamor is a role model for Filipino-Americans. She helped to establish JazzPhil-USA, a nonprofit organization which promotes jazz artists of Filipino descent in the United States.
Originally from the provincial town of Subic-Zambales, in the Philippines, Ms. Clamor’s singing career began at the age of 3, entertaining passengers (whether they liked it or not!) from the back of buses traveling to Manila.
Charmaine Clamor has toured nationally and internationally, and will finally grace Atlanta with her musical prowess and Filipina mystique at the Southern Arts Federation’s Performing Arts Exchange Conference on Thursday, September 25, at the Hyatt Regency. Charmaine Clamor will open the fall season of The Real Jazz Spot – Studio 281 – on September 26th and 27th, with shows 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Expect a night of soulful, serenade from this captivating World Jazz performer.
